About Nhut Thanh Vo
A Story of Redemption
Nhut is an infamous ex-inmate who spent 20 years in a maximum security prison after being convicted in 2002 of some pretty heavy charges. At the time of incident, Nhut was only 16 years old and an active member of a Vietnamese street gang.
While in prison, Nhut completely changed his life. He embraced Buddhism and rehabilitation and developed his skills as an artist.
Nhut was released from prison in 2020, based on the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the sentencing of juveniles to life without parole constitutes as “cruel and unusual punishment.” The LMU Loyola Law School’s Juvenile Innocence and Fair Sentencing Clinic (JIFS) found Nhut and aided in his release based on the US Supreme Court ruling.
Nhut turned his life around while in prison—and has continued to live a positive, spiritual, and successful life since his release—by finding passion and purpose in his art and through meditation. Today, Nhut is also highly involved in nonprofit work throughout Orange County.
